When do you stuff your Amigurumi piece?
Tips for Perfectly Stuffing Your Amigurumi Ball!
Filling your Amigurumi projects is a crucial step to ensure your crochet creations maintain their shape and look professional. But when should you stuff your Amigurumi ball or piece? The right timing of stuffing can make a big difference in the final result of your crochet work.
Timing of Stuffing
- Stuff your Amigurumi ball as late as possible. Why? This prevents accidentally crocheting the stuffing into your work, which can lead to an uneven and lumpy finish.
Here are my personal guidelines for stuffing an Amigurumi ball:
- Wait until you have about 12 stitches remaining: This is usually the perfect moment to start stuffing the ball or piece. By doing this, you minimize the risk of crocheting the stuffing along with your stitches.
- Follow the crochet pattern: If the pattern provides specific instructions for stuffing, follow those guidelines. Some patterns have reasons for earlier or later stuffing.
- For large Amigurumi projects: Larger projects may require earlier stuffing, but avoid stuffing until the final rounds. This way, you maintain control over your stitches and prevent the stuffing from getting in the way.
Why Stuff Later?
By waiting to stuff your Amigurumi pieces until near completion, you avoid several common issues, such as:
- Avoiding accidentally crocheting the stuffing: This ensures a smooth and even appearance of your Amigurumi.
- Better control over your stitches: Without stuffing in the way, you can make your stitches tighter and more even.
- Neater finish: The final rounds are often the most critical. Waiting to stuff until the end helps ensure these rounds look neat and tight.
Practical Tips for Stuffing Amigurumi
- Use small amounts of stuffing at a time: This helps to evenly distribute the stuffing without creating bumps.
- Press the stuffing firmly: For a firm and well-shaped Amigurumi, it's important to evenly distribute and press the stuffing.
- Regularly check the shape: While stuffing, continue to check the shape of your Amigurumi and adjust the stuffing as needed.

Stuff the ball slightly, but not too firmly, otherwise your filling will be crocheted as well.
After your last Row (most of the time the row with the 6 stitches) cut a longer piece of yarn and with this yarn you close the ball.
Stuff the ball firmly.
For this, use the back of your crochet hook or a pencil.
Use the crochet hook to firmly stuff the ball.
