How do you start a beautiful Amigurumi circle?
Discover the Magic Ring technique!
Are you ready to start crocheting a beautiful Amigurumi cuddly toy? The secret to a perfect beginning lies in the foundation: the Amigurumi Circle. For the best results, we always recommend starting with a Magic Ring. This technique creates a tight and even center, ideal for your Amigurumi projects.
At Pixel 2 Mix, we always use a single strand for our Magic Ring instead of a double strand or ring. Why? Because it ensures that the center of your Amigurumi doesn't become too thick and achieves a very neat finish. This small adjustment can make a big difference in the quality of your crochet work.
Steps to Make a Magic Ring:
- Start with a single strand: Wrap the yarn around your fingers to create a loop.
- Secure with a chain stitch: Insert your hook through the loop and chain one to secure your Magic Ring.
- Crochet your first round: Work the required number of single crochet stitches (US term) into the loop.
- Tighten the loop: Instead of tightening the loop immediately after Row 1, wait until you have completed your first row. Then gently tighten the loop to close your circle.
Why Use a Single Strand?
Using a single strand instead of a double strand for your Magic Ring offers several advantages. It prevents the center of your Amigurumi from becoming too thick, which can result in a less tight and professional appearance. Additionally, a single strand provides even tension, making crocheting easier and improving the final result.
Give It a Try!
Test this method and see the difference for yourself! You'll notice that your Amigurumi projects have a much neater and more polished finish. The Magic Ring with a single strand is a simple yet effective way to elevate your crochet work.

First crochet Rows 1 - 3 without pulling the Magic Ring too tightly, but just a little bit.
After Row 3, tighten the yarn of the Magic Ring. This will result in a neater center closure compared to doing it immediately after Row 1.
